Journal Articles |
|
| I wrote many free-lance pieces for training, computer, and networking trade journals in the 1990s. It was, at the time, a very lucrative sideline. These four are typical of what editors were looking for at the time. A complete list of my journal publications appears in my resume. When I joined Microsoft, I was required to stop taking freelance writing work, as per their corporate policy. Boeing/Jeppesen also discourages independent publishing. |

Back in 1998, many thought computer-based training would completely supplant instructor-led training. In this Training Magazine article, I made my case for why instructor-led training would always be important. |
|
|
In this article in the nationally-distributed Local Area Network (LAN) Magazine, I discuss the importance of concepts such as Instructional Design and Mastery Learning to institutional personnel training. |
|
|
In this article in the technical professional journal, Stacks Magazine, I help technical administrators, who were generally education novices, to understand how the principles of Adult Education can help make their in-service training operations more effective. |

This piece in Stacks Magazine discusses platform skills and what makes a great teacher in the public or private sphere. |

For six years, I designed, wrote, and served as Project Manager for a variety of courses in the international Microsoft Certified Engineer (MCSE) program. Here is some of the front-matter and a few sample pages from a SQL Server course. (Note that the content is now obsolete. This course has been replaced and is of no current commercial value.) |

When I arrived at Black Hills State University, I needed to adjust my instructional design style to a very different non-technical audience for this course on Building Web Pages. This workbook is supplemented by a course CD of live samples and exercises. This large file loads slowly, so it would be best to save it to your desktop rather than opening it directly. Click here to see, in a separate window, the entire Web site that the students in this course would build over the course of ten weeks of afternoon workshops. To view this work successfully, be sure your Browser is set to allow pop-ups and Active Content (ActiveX). |

Here is a multimedia training piece that I designed for the Commericial Marine Division of Boeing-Jeppesen.It contains 177 MB of audio/visual training. |

Click the picture for an example of a bit of Flash content from one of my old Microsoft courses. Again, the content is now obsolete. I am fascinated by the possibilities of animation and attended the FlashForward Conference in NYC in the summer of 2004. (Requires FlashPlayer or equivalent on your computer.)

Once again, my style had
to change to accommodate my new clients at Black Hills State University.
Here are some screen shots from my CD-based interactive 4-hour
faculty workshop on Web Design. (Each screen shot may take a
few moments to appear.) Click here to see, in a separate window, the entire Web Design Workshop CD. Please note that this workshop was intended to be loaded on local hard drives in a lab from CD, so optimizing graphic size was not critical. Some graphics will take a moment to load over a slow Web connection. You can also click here to see the type of Web design work done by the student intern team that I trained and supervised at Black Hills State. We worked on selected portions of the campus Web presence. Of course, additional work has been done since I left BHSU. |
